PGR awareness programme organized in Phek district Nagaland

The ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (NBPGR), New Delhi, in collaboration with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Phek, Nagaland, organized two Plant Genetic Resources (PGR) conservation awareness program at Hetika and Meluri villages in Phek district of Nagaland on 27th and 29th January, 2025 respectively. The programs were aimed to raise awareness among tribal communities about the importance of conserving Plant Genetic Resources (PGRs) for sustainable agriculture and food security. The program saw active participation of 200 farmers belonging to Chakesang and Pochury tribes from Hetika, Meluri, and nearby villages.

On both occasions Dr. Harish G.D., Officer-in-Charge of the NBPGR Regional Station, Umiam, Meghalaya, briefed the farmers on the critical role of NBPGR in identifying, collecting, and conserving Plant Genetic Resources (PGRs) across the country. He elaborated on the bureau’s ongoing efforts to protect indigenous crop varieties, particularly in the northeastern region. Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Head of KVK Phek while emphasizing on the rich landrace diversity of Nagaland and highlighted its significance in enhancing agricultural resilience and preserving traditional crop varieties. He also underscored the need for tribal farmers active participation in conservation efforts to ensure long-term agricultural sustainability.

As a part of the program, agricultural inputs such as tarpaulin, water pipe, secateurs, sickle and torch, were distributed among the farmers to support their agricultural activities under NEH component.
