To generate awareness about the importance of conservation and utilization of plant genetic resources in the North Eastern region of India, a Biodiveristy hot spot, ICAR-NBPGR organized a one-day training workshop on “Plant Genetic Resources Awareness Programme” in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, South Garo Hills, Meghalaya on 3rd December 2025. A total of 150 farmers representing 10 villages across South Garo Hills and 15 KVK staff took part in the workshop. Shri Jericko N. Sangma, the Block Development Officer; Dr. Haribhushan (Head and PC KVK), Dr. Tanya R. Marak SMS (Plant Protection), Mr. Basu Langpoklakpam (SMS, Horticulture), Mr. Rike Chelchak A. Sangma (SMS, Agronomy), and Mr. Mishael R. Marak (HDO, Chokpot C&RD Block) interacted with the farmers, delivered lectures on different aspects of vegetable cultivation. Dr. Rashmi Yadav, Principal Scientist and the workshop coordinator from the ICAR-NBPGR highlighted the importance of plant genetic resources in ensuring agricultural sustainability, conservation, and crop improvement. The farmers were provided with vegetable seed kits containing seven types of vegetable seeds to start crop diversification and improve resilience. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Rupam Bhattacharjya, SMS (Livestock), KVK South Garo Hills, who acknowledged the contributions of the organisers, resource persons, and participating farmers and Dr K.P. Mohapatra, Principal Scientist from the ICAR-NBPGR headquarters, New Delhi for facilitating and coordinating the program for the benefit of the tribal farmers in the North East India.
