Salient Achievements
- In sesame, 5856 accessions that were being conserved in the Indian National Genebank were genotyped using ddRAD-seq approach.
- Generated plastid genome and chromosome-scale draft genome assemblies for sesame and wild rice species.
- Proposed for a multi-cell C4 photosynthetic pathway (non-Kranz and NAD-ME dependent) involving three tissue types (outer pericarp, inner pericarp, and endosperm) in developing wheat grains.
- Discovery of an in planta photorespiratory bypass mediated through chloroplastic pyruvate dehydrogenase gene (cpPdc) in developing rice grains, and this happens to be the shortest C2 shuttle known.
- Discovery of a non-Kranz NAD-ME dependent C4 photosynthetic pathway in developing wheat grains – a classical C3
- Proposed for the evolution of an intermediate type C4 photosynthesis (without Kranz) in non-foliar photosynthetic organ (developing grain) in BOP clade (eg: wheat, barley) prior to the evolution of an efficient foliar C4 photosynthesis in PACMAD clade (eg: maize, sorghum)
- Proposed a concept through transcriptome studies in sesame, longer duration of expression of the genes of oil biosynthesis (early onset, by 10 dpa and sustained till 30 dpa) accommodates a broader window of time for active oil accumulation is crucial for higher oil yield in sesame.
- Identification of novel genes and involvement of genes known for carbohydrate metabolism in imparting heat stress tolerance during grain filling in wheat using RNA-seq approach.
- Involved in multiplication and screening of wheat germplasm collection being conserved at the Indian National Genebank that had resulted in identification of novel genetic stocks.
